DESCRIPTION
Physical Description: Throughout her life, Ari has been known for and has been trying to escape her signature long, red hair. When she was younger, she remembered her mother's friends constantly touching her hair, braiding it, and putting it into all different sorts of styles as they commented on how similar it was to her mother's hair. As she grew older and gained more freedom and leverage with her mother though, she was constantly coloring her hair and keeping it as short as possible as her way of getting back at some of those women. However, after the passing of her mother, she has allowed her red hair to grow long yet again and promises to retain her natural color.
Other than her signature long, red hair, Ari has slightly oversized blue eyes and light skin that freckles when the sun hits it just right. Basically, she is a classic redhead. There is nothing particularly remarkable about her appearance as a redhead, either. Sure, she has the long locks and the big blue eyes, but she stands only at 5'5" and can often be seen with a classic redhead sunburn that seems to never fade to a tan other than the tan of her freckles. An average to petite build and the adorable , white smile suit her red hair well, though.
Style:She can often be found in a simple outfit from day to day consisting of plain jeans that tend to be just a tad too long and whatever clean shirt she might be able to find for the day. Occasionally, if the weather permits, Ari may be found in her favorite simple, black dress or even is a pair of denim shorts she keeps in the back of her closest. The one thing about her wardrobe that never seems to change is her lack of shoes. Shoes always bothered her as a kid and now, whenever she can get away with it, she travels quite barefoot.
Looks Like: Amy Adams
Personality: From a broad view, Ari is a laid back, averagely quiet "loner" who observes every one from afar. But when she is looked at a bit more closely, it is possible to pick out the little things that make her tick such as her slight raise of an eyebrow whenever a boy finds it appropriate to "check her out" or the tap of her foot when people insult her. Sure, she is a laid back girl overall, but the little ignorant things that people do just seem to grind her wheels (such as guys who thinks it's their right to undress a girl with his piggish eyes or the girl who is so small minded and doesn't bother to learn the facts before accusing someone, namely Ari). As for being quiet, it was never really her own personality that forced her to be so noiseless but it was her mind that forced to be be such. She learned at an early age when she was forced to sit still and have her hair jerked and pulled that when she was silent, people often forgot she was there or assumed she wasn't listening and would therefore say so much more. Then again, some people realized that she was indeed there listening and would roll their eyes and just make the excuse that she had no friends and therefore felt the need to butt into their conversation. This was entirely untrue (well, almost entirely) but that didn't stop the rumors from flying nevertheless.
Even in her personality Ari is a rather unremarkable girl.

History: Growing up in the small town of Hillsdale, Michigan, Ari had a rather uneventful childhood, so she thought. She grew up thinking that magic was a gift that every one had but that you weren't supposed to use in public so people didn't get jealous if you had a "better gift". Also, growing up as an only child until she was six, Ari kind of got used to the "Hey Mommy look what I just did with the t.v.!" moments and having the full attention of her parents. When her mother got pregnant though, things changed. Mother's friends started playing with her hair, talking about the new baby. Would the baby have mine and my mother's red hair, would it have daddy's blue eyes, et cetera. When Julia was born, Ari couldn't help but smile her second grade smile when she saw that Julia did not share her red hair or her blue eyes. She knew that when they came home from the hospital mother;s friends would still like her best because of her pretty hair and her big blue eyes. She was wrong. It was that year that she learn babies will always be cuter than the older siblings, always.
It wasn't long before mother had Mazie and a few years later her little brother Nanne. To Ari's disappointment, her popularity only lessened with mother's friends with the new babies, but she still held her secret smile when neither Mazie nor Nanne came out with mother's beautiful red hair. Around the time Nanne was born was also when Ari really started to bond with her father. While mother and her friends (when they didn't wish to tug and pull on Ari's hair) were were busy with the baby and the preschooler, Ari and her father would sneak off to the park and get strawberry ice cream cones.
Things changed when mother get pregnant with Laina. This pregnancy was much more difficult for her mother than the others and father could no longer go away with her to the park like they used to for he was often at mother's side while she lay in bed at home or sometimes in the hospital. After about seven months of the pregnancy had gone by, mother went into premature labor at the hospital. The doctors did all they could for her mother and Laina, but even though they managed to rush away with Laina and force her to live, nothing they did was enough for her mother. After so many hours of labor, Ari's mother passed away before she could even see her new daughter.
Since then, Ari has sort of been like a make-shift mother for her younger siblings and a band-aid for her father. While he could put on a convincing happy front for the younger three, he couldn't fool her. Wanting to get away from the city in which he lost his wife and from all of her nagging friends he never cared for, her father picked the four of them up and moved out to San Francisco to be closer to his mother and father when Ari was about 14. When they moved and Ari's father talked it over with her grandparents, Ari was enrolled in Magic School.
SAMPLE WRITING:
With a slight chill moving with the wind, the gloom of the grey clouds doubled as their reflection moved across the glassy surface of the great lake. Normally, wandering outdoors on such a day would be avoided by nearly all of the students and faculty at the school, but today the gloom seemed to draw them outdoors. Across the windblown lawn were dozens upon dozens of students huddled into groups talking in hushed tones –as the mood of the day specified- and occasionally a small bell of laughter would float with the wind for a moment before dying in the obscurity of the clouds. It was extraordinarily odd, though, to see a small cluster of professors and aids move up the path to the school with heads bowed and their voices low.
Observing this odd day from the steps before the large, main doors of the school sat an uncommonly common girl by the name of Ariante Hovana. Now, Ari usually spent her time outdoors in this kind of weather and knew that others did not. Clusters of students were usually found in the library as they looked tiredly over assignments, in common rooms playing an overly competitive game of wizard’s chest, in the halls loitering or playing tricks, or something else of the likes. But today, these rooms seemed oddly empty as Ari passed them by and the moment she stepped out onto the steps upon which she now sat she knew why.
Sighing, she ran a pale hand through her stick-straight, wheat colored hair and stretched her legs out before her. Usually she could have the benefit of sitting outside on a day like to day, enjoying the solitude the gloom and chill allowed her, unbothered by the meaningless chatter of immature girls and boys as they teased each other and chased each other around trees and across the lawn. However, for some reason she was not granted such an extended moment of solitude today and was reminded of that the moment a redheaded girl rushed past her with a scrawny boy not far behind. Ari used to think it was cute how “tweens” flirted and teased each other, but her tolerance for it had long since passed.
With another sigh, she let her head rest against the cool stone behind her and closed her grey eyes against the sight of annoyance and willed her ears to stop hearing the screams and giggles of those prancing about around her.
